WAHI NOHO

Hawaii has a rich native culture and language. In 1978 Hawaiian was named the official language of Hawaii along with English. The Hawaiian Language was traditionally an oral language but was translated into a written language during the early missionary era. There are only 12 letters (a, e, i, o, u, h, k, l, m, n, p, w) used in the Hawaiian alphabet; there is also what is known as a kahako (ā, ē, ī, ō, ū) which makes the vowel long and an okina (')similar to an apostrophe that breaks up the sound. For example, this is the proper way of writing Poi'pū. We thought you would enjoy a little lesson in Hawaiian Language that encompasses the New Year of 2009.
